DUP MP Jim Shannon breaks down in tears describing mother-in-law's death alone

A Northern Irish MP broke down in tears when describing how his mother-in-law died alone during the pandemic.

Strangford DUP MP Jim Shannon could not hold back his emotions as he asked the Paymaster General about the investigation into a 'garden party' at 10 Downing Street in May 2020.

His mother-in-law died as a result of Covid in October 2020 and was unable to be in the company of her family as a result of the restrictions that were in place at the time.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Shannon said: "In Northern Ireland we have reached the milestone of 3,000 deaths due to Covid just last week. 3,000 deaths of people who followed the rules.

"Including my mother-in-law who died alone.

"Will the Paymaster General confirm that there will be a full and complete disclosure to enable the police service to ascertain that all was done decently and within the regulations at that date and at that time."

During Mr Shannon's question he had to briefly pause as his emotions got the better of him, while other MPs encouraged him to continue and expressed their sympathies for his family's loss.
