DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson holds meeting with LGBT group

DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has held a meeting with an LGBT organisation.

He met with representatives of the Rainbow Project on Monday at Stormont.

It is believed to be the first time a DUP leader has had a sit-down meeting with an LGBT group.

The engagement is the latest sign that the DUP is slowly softening its stance towards the LGBT community.

It is understood Sir Jeffrey met with the Rainbow Project in the afternoon at Parliament Buildings, a DUP source told Belfast Live.

They described the meeting as "very pleasant and cordial".

Sir Jeffrey routinely shares on Twitter photos of his various engagements but the Lagan Valley MP's meeting with the LGBT charity was not similarly publicised.

The DUP and the Rainbow Project have been approached for comment.

The DUP has a long history of hostility towards LGBT people, including party founder Ian Paisley Snr leading the "Save Ulster from Sodomy" campaign in the 1970s against the decriminalisation of homosexuality.

In July, DUP deputy leader Paula Bradley apologised for the "absolutely atrocious" comments made in the past by some in her party against LGBT people.

Sir Jeffrey backed Ms Bradley's apology, saying that people can hold "deeply held views" on social issues in a respectful way.

While the DUP has opposed same-sex marriage, party MLA Pam Cameron last month shared online her delight at attending her best friends' gay wedding.

The DUP leader has previously said he wants to "broaden the appeal of unionism".

In his first keynote speech after becoming leader, he said his party needs to be in the "mainstream of unionism" and they cannot afford to marginalise themselves with "policies that apply to the few and not the many".

Earlier this year, a planned meeting between then First Minister Arlene Foster and LGBT organisations was cancelled after she was ousted as DUP leader.

Mrs Foster in 2018 became the first DUP leader to attend an LGBT event when she addressed a PinkNews reception at Stormont.

She said she valued the LGBT community's contribution to Northern Ireland, but asked people to respect her opposition to same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage was legalised in Northern Ireland last year after Westminster intervened during the Assembly's three-year collapse.
