DUP leader Arlene Foster 'death threat' man speaks out

A man who claims he posted the latest online ‘threat’ against DUP leader Arlene Foster has spoken out.

The DUP called for action on online abuse following the Facebook comment in he which he said he “must try” shooting their leader to “see if I’d get away with it”.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, told Belfast Live he “deeply regrets” what he posted on the social media platform.

"It was not the most intelligent thing I’ve ever said or done," he added.

"You must believe me it was not a personal attack on Arlene that is not my character, it was just a moment of stupidity. If I could take it back I would.

"Of course I apologise unequivocally and sincerely to Arlene for any distress or offence," he continued.

"I hope that I may be forgiven for one mistake and for my stupidity.

"I can assure you it is embarrassing me. I hope we can all move on."

The comment, which was posted under a Facebook share of an old Guardian article on June 26, has been removed.

It was reported to police, who have not confirmed if an investigation has been launched.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "We do not discuss the security of individuals and no inference should be drawn from this.

"However, if we receive information that a person's life may be at risk we will inform them accordingly. We never ignore anything which may put an individual at risk."

The man said police have not been in touch with him.
