PUNE: Two men on Sunday night diverted a woman’s attention at an ATM kiosk on Dehu Road, swapped her debit card and later used it to make purchases worth Rs16,000.
The woman (22)realised that her debit card had been swapped when she received SMS alerts for two transactions. She immediately approached the Dehu Road police and filed a complaint.
Sub-inspector Vaibhav Patil of the Dehu Road police told TOI that around 7pm on Sunday, the woman went to an ATM kiosk along the Dehu-Alandi Road. “She first withdrew Rs10,000. While she was carrying out another transaction, she got a call from her friend. While she was talking to her, two unknown men entered inside and objected to her using cellphone inside the kiosk,” Patil said.
He said that woman could not complete her transaction due to some issue. “One of them pretended to help her and handed over a debit card to her,” the officer said.
He said that the woman then tried to withdrew money from two different cash dispensing machines but failed. “She did not realise that her card had been swapped,” Patil said. The officer said that the woman then went home. After some time, she received two messages from the bank about the debit of Rs16,000 from two transactions.
“The woman checked her card and found that it was not hers,” the officer said. Patil said that the police have sought the transfer details and the CCTV footages from the bank, Patil said.
