Duo rescued from Tynemouth rocks after 'becoming stranded by the tide'

Two men were rescued from rocks in Tynemouth after becoming stranded by the rising tide.

Brave volunteers raced to their rescue after the pair made a 999 call.

It was one of three call outs for the Cullercoats RNLI crew in under four hours on Easter Sunday.

They also assisted a broken down motor cruiser East of St Mary's Island as well as some kids who had came into difficulty in Brown's Bay, in Cullercoats.

The youngsters had reached a place of safety by the time the crew - as well as firefighters - arrived.

However it was the third call out - at Tynemouth's Sharpness Point - which was the most dramatic.

"The lifeboat launched and made best speed towards Sharpness Point, where the two casualties could be seen on a rock with the tide rising around them," said the RNLI.

"They had called 999 and asked the Coastguard for the lifeboat once they realised they were in danger.

"The lifeboat manoeuvred between the rocks, where the crew were able to bring the casualties onto the boat.

"Once they were safely aboard, the lifeboat returned to station where the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were also waiting to provide assistance."

All of those involved in the three incidents were "safe and well" added the charity.

But the trio of call outs, on one of the hottest days of 2019 to date, has seen the public urged to enjoy the sun in a "safe and responsible manner".

"If you do see someone in danger at the coast please remember to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard," said a spokesperson for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade.

So far this year, the brigade has already received 25 call outs.
