Duo of Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson has Jay Gruden excited

The Washington Redskins are currently dealing with two extremes.

On one hand, there is little confidence in who the starting quarterback will be, and how effective said QB is on the field. Both Case Keenum and Colt McCoy have shown brief flashes on the field, but neither has been able to attain lasting success.

On the other hand, the Redskins currently have two running backs that could potentially be starters, hopefully acting as difference-makers on offense.

With veteran RB Adrian Peterson and second-year young-gun Derrius Guice set to explode out of the backfield, Washington has an embarrassment of riches on their hands. Which one will they eventually choose to start?

“That’s an interesting dilemma right there,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said, via ProFootball Talk. “Number one, Guice has got to get healthy. . . . He’s young, I’m sure it’ll be effortless for him to get back in shape, but still, we’re talking about a major knee injury for a running back. So, it’s something we have to really look at and make sure he’s 100 percent. And make sure he still runs with the same type of energy and charisma and effort he played with before the injury, because sometimes those injuries have an effect on you mentally.”

Guice was expected to be the No. 1 RB for the Redskins going into the 2018 season, but a torn ACL sidelined him for the year and led to Washington bringing in 33-year-old Peterson.

In Guice’s absence, AP racked up over 1,000 yards and proved that he still has a bit of gas left in the tank,

With the duo expected to be fully healthy going into the 2019 season, expect the Redskins to rely heavily on the run game, no matter which back stands in the backfield.
