Dunnes Stores workers to get 10% COVID-19 premium payment following petition

Dunnes Stores workers will be paid a 10% Covid-19 premium payment,it emerged today.

Management confirmed the funding boost would be made to employees and backdated to March 9.

The move came after a Mandate Trade Union petition was signed by more than 3,000 workers who pushed for greater support during the outbreak.

Rival retailers such as Tesco and Aldi had announced they were paying a 10% premium payment and Dunnes Stores employees had called for a similar initiative.

The Irish supermarket chain also confirmed they would boost the staff discount card to 20% for all workers, while Mandate said the company had agreed to a Covid-19 sick pay scheme.

Mandate’s General Secretary John Douglas said it was a positive move by Dunnes Stores and he stressed it was the least profitable retailers should be doing during the Covid-19 crisis.

He added: “There are thousands of retail workers all across the country who are putting their own health at risk during this public health crisis.

“The very least they should expect is a 10% premium on top of their current pay rates.”
