Dungannon Swifts boss Dean Shiels hails "superb" new signing after shock Larne win

Dungannon Swifts boss Dean Shiels reckons new boy Declan Dunne could prove to be one of the most effective signings of the January window.

Dunne, who has represented Northern Ireland at U21 level, was snapped up on a three and a half year contract from Cliftonville earlier this month.

And in his short time at Stangmore Park so far, the 21-year-old goalkeeper has helped deliver back-to-back league wins over Warrenpoint Town and Larne.

Saturday’s shock victory at Inver Park was Dungannon’s first clean sheet in 15 league outings and their first points against a top-eight club this campaign.

“Declan looks so safe and secure as a goalkeeper,” said Shiels. “I knew the potential he had when I signed him and I thought he was superb against Larne.

“As well as his ability, he’s mentally tough. He’s a tough kid. He’s 6’4” tall and he’s got presence.

“He has got a great chance to be successful in this game and I’m delighted to get him.”

Dunne - whose handling was impeccable at Inver Park - was one of EIGHT players in Shiels’ starting line-up at Larne aged 21 or under.

Dungannon’s back four included two 19-year-olds (Michael Glynn and Ethan McGee) while Luke McKendry and Cahal McGinty are 20 and 21 respectively.

“We have a great talented bunch and we will continue to play young players if they are of the right quality,” said Shiels. “We are building for the future and I love working with them.

“We have young players but they look hungry to be successful and I sense we are improving every week.”
