Dungannon factory workers ‘at serious risk’ with lack of lighting on route from town centre

Factory workers making their way to work in Dungannon are at "serious risk" of being injured due to a lack of street lighting on the Granville Road, a local campaigner has said.

Many workers without vehicles walk the route between the Co Tyrone town centre and a number of factories based on the road, a 45-minute journey with some areas not covered by street lights or footpaths.

Workers at the factories often perform shift work, meaning that they have to walk the road during hours of darkness.

Glena McDowell-Khan has set up a petition for the Department for Infrastructure to make the road safer for walkers making their way to work.

“This route is posing a serious risk, making anyone that uses it vulnerable,” Glena said.

“Many of the workers in those factories are using it to walk on as they have no other form of transport

“Lighting is needed to keep pedestrians safe that use the road.

“Employees from the local factories walk this route day and night and can’t see or be seen.

Glena, who runs the non-profit organisation Me, You and Them in Dungannon, says many of those who enter her shop are those who make the journey from the town out to the factories.

The Department has agreed to meet with local representatives on the issue, and Glena added that the workers should be allowed to make their way to work safely.

“I would like to see them listen and taking on board what we are saying,” she said.

“It has been going on too long and I want to know that people in my community can go out safely to their work and return safely from work.”
