Dundrum garda hailed a hero after rescuing dying kitten from a skip bin

An off-duty garda was hailed a hero after rescuing a dying kitten from a skip bin last weekend.

Garda Carol Corrigan of the Dundrum Garda Station was on her way to work in the early hours of Saturday when she heard a faint cry for help from a bin outside an apartment complex.

The bin wasn’t fully open but she saw there was a fully soaked young kitten nearly freezing to death.

Garda Corrigan couldn’t reach the kitten through its small opening at the top so she tipped it towards her and reached inside to pull the kitten out of the “very dirty and extremely smelly chamber”.

A spokesperson for DSPCA said on social media: “The kitten by now had pretty much stopped breathing and things were looking very desperate but the Garda managed to get the kitten home and quickly began to bring him back to life by bathing him in warm water and wrapping him in towels and blankets, not to forget giving him a lot of TLC before making her way to our shelter in Rathfarnham.

“The kitten is called Skippy, he is now on medication at the DSPCA shelter and doing very well.

“The wonderful kind person who rescued the kitten is Garda Carol Corrigan of Dundrum Garda station.”
