Dundrum dad hailed a hero after he plunges into River Liffey to save drowning man

A Dublin man has been hailed a hero after he selflessly dived into the River Liffey to help save a drowning man.

Dundrum man Daragh Mulvany, 41, was walking along the quays with a friend when he spotted the man in difficulty near Butt Bridge on Tuesday evening.

The brave dad-of-three sprung into action, climbing down a rope to get to the casualty and stayed with him until emergency services arrived.

A relative hailed the "courageous" Daragh, who afterwards was only concerned about the wellbeing of the stricken victim.

She told Dublin Live: "A crowd had gathered by the water and he [Daragh] approached with his friend to witness a man drowning.

"He could see that the steps were too far to make it over to the man and he believed that he would get into difficulty himself if he went this route so he decided to climb down on a rope by the side of the water.

"He managed to turn the man around, who was facing down in the water and with the help of buoy, he treaded the water for about five minutes until the divers arrived.

"They then thanked him and asked him to swim to the steps and they continued on with their rescue."

Daragh was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure before being picked up and brought home.

On the journey home the selfless hero was only concerned about the man he had saved.

The relative added: "When we asked him about it, he said that he wouldn't have been able to live with himself if he had watched him drown and didn't try and do something."

Daragh is now hoping to get in touch with the man he saved to get an update on his condition.
