Dundonald football chaplains preparing for 30k walking challenge

A number of football chaplains based in Dundonald are embarking on a special charity challenge on Sunday.

They will collectively walk 30km around Ballybeen to raise money for the Ulster Hospital, Marie Curie and other community projects.

Michael Myles (Dundonald FC), Steven Thompson (Dungoyne Boys), Darren Martin (Tullycarnet FC), James Bell (Linfield Ladies) and Philip Mitchell (NI Director of Sports Chaplaincy UK) will be putting their best foot forward.

The event is all part of National Sports Sunday which is held across the UK on May 17.

"The day encourages sports chaplains and the sports community to try and link in with the church community," explained Steven Thompson.

"Generally, churches will have a sports-themed service where they will have speakers and interviews.

"With the current situation, we are having online services, but we thought it would be good to do a walk to try and raise money for the Ulster Hospital, Marie Curie and some other community projects.

"The Dundonald area is quite strong for sports chaplains. Dundonald FC have one, Tullycarnet have a chaplain, I am involved with Dungoyne Boys, and there is James Bell who is with Linfield Ladies.

"Ex-Irish League player Philip Mitchell is the Northern Ireland co-ordinator for sports chaplaincy, so we came together and thought of this idea."

Steven added: "We will walk around Ballybeen because there is an existing 5k circuit there and hopefully we can raise as much money as possible.

"We are over £1,000 now and hopefully that will rise.

"We have set our walking distance at 30k, but we hope to break through that. The guys will do their walks at different times, and I think we will go well over 30k by the end of it.

"Some people thought we were all doing 30k each, but that would be a bit of a stretch.

"But between us I think we will get between 40-50k."

A fundraising page has been set up for people to donate, and there is also a bucket collection at Cordners Spar on the Comber Road, Dundonald.
