Dundee United suffer Peterhead shock as Hearts leave it late in Cowdenbeath win - Betfred Cup round up

Peterhead shocked Dundee United with a 1-0 win at Tannadice in the Betfred Cup.

Former Hamilton striker Steven Boyd got the only goal of the game as the League One side shocked their Premiership opponents in Group C.

The Tannadice side had put six past Brechin in midweek while Peterhead were playing their first game of the tournament and it was a huge win for Jim McInally's men.

Boyd popped up with the only goal of the game in 51 minutes and Micky Mellon's side couldn't find a way back.

In the same group, St Johnstone were the second side to put six past Brechin and there was a hat-trick for Stevie May.

David Wotherspoon grabbed a double before Callum Hendry scored a penalty and Murray Davidson added a late strike make it 7-0 and leave former Celtic defender Mark Wilson wondering what he can do to improve his League Two strugglers.

Elsewhere in the competition, Championship favourites Hearts scraped past Cowdenbeath with a 1-0 win. They struggled to break down their bottom tier opponents until Craig Halkett headed home with 12 minutes to go.

Jamie Walker missed a penalty for the Jambos late on but Robbie Neilson's men held on.

Livingston had to come from behind to claim the points in their game after Ryan Thomson had given Alloa the lead in the first half.

Alan Forrest got an equaliser a minute after the break before Josh Mullin got his third goal in two games since returning to the club to get the winner.

Hamilton also got their first win of the competition after their midweek defeat to Ayr United.

Marios Ogkmpoe got the opener before Charlie Trafford added a second and they held on despite Michael Moffat getting one back.

St Mirren needed penalties to get the win as they came from 2-0 down at half time to draw. Queen of the South flew into the lead with goals from Connor Shields and Aidan Fitzpatrick in the opening 12 minutes.

Jamie McGrath got one back for the visitors before Marcus Fraser added a second with minutes left before Jim Goodwin's side took the bonus point.
