Dundee United snap up former Motherwell goalkeeper

Goalkeeper Trevor Carson has signed a two-year deal at Dundee United, having left Motherwell after four years.

The 33-year-old arrived at Fir Park from Hartlepool United in 2017, and though he was pivotal in Motherwell reaching the 2017-18 League Cup and Scottish Cup finals, a series of injuries and serious illness meant the Northern Irishman played only 57 times.

Carson's 18 clean sheets in that double cup final season contributed to a club record 20, and that form established him as one of the top keepers in the Premiershipc, leading to his first caps in friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica.

An ankle injury suffered in a clash with Hearts in September 2018 was the start of Carson's problems, however, and in November it was revealed that he had developed deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder and a lung.

He returned to action in the 2020-21 season and his heroics in the Europa League qualifier against Coleraine saw him save all three of their penalties in a shoot-out, as they progressed to meet Hapoel Beer-Sheva, where they bowed out of the competition.

Injury would strike again, however, with a knee injury in October requiring surgery.

Carson left for Tannadice on Thursday, with the club saying in a statement: "We wish Trevor all the best for the future, and thank him for all he did for our club."
