Dundee United players agree wage cuts as Mark Ogren pushes crucial savings drive amid financial crunch

Dundee United’s players have agreed wage cuts to help the club through their Covid-19 cash crisis.

The Tannadice playing staff have followed their management and senior staff in taking deductions.

The players have agreed to take short-term cuts with the situation to be reviewed going forward.

United had approached their first-team stars at the end of October to ask them to take cuts.

The players had all indicated from the start they were willing to help the club, although many had differing circumstances.

The Tannadice hierarchy have made it clear they have to make savings because owner Mark Ogren has already had to make up the shortfalls from no gate receipts or match day revenues since March.

Scotland has now been put into lockdown for the rest of the month so the chance to get supporters back in the near future looks even more distant.

United, who had initially floated the possibility of 20 per cent cuts, have made it clear to their players that they would get back up to their full wages when football gets back to normal or if they can sell or bring in money to balance the books.

The majority of Premiership clubs have asked their top stars to take wage cuts or deferrals since the pandemic came to the fore.

United also have an insurance policy but are still in discussions with their insurers to see how much of their losses will be covered.

United won’t be overly active in the transfer market unless they sell first, although they might have to look at short-term midfield options  with Jeando Fuchs and Calum Butcher both looking to be out for several weeks.
