Dundee United lead trio in stepping up legal fight against Hearts and Partick Thistle as clubs issue plea

Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers have asked SPFL clubs to back them in their legal fight against Hearts and Partick Thistle.

The trio have been petitioned in a case brought to the Court of Session by demoted Jambos and Thistle, who want to deny them promotion or claim £10million in damages from the SPFL if they are relegated.

The three clubs are due to respond by the middle of this week, while the SPFL are currently considering their next move in the ongoing saga.

The champions of the three lower leagues are canvassing support from all the clubs who voted for the campaign to be called on an average points-per-game standing.

They have already warned it would be financially disastrous if they were to lose this battle and would have a catastrophic impact on Scottish football.

The trio will point out 81 per cent of teams voted for the SPFL’s controversial end of season resolution, which saw United named Championship winners, Raith claim the League One title and Cove lift the League Two trophy.

It meant Partick went down from Championship with Stranraer dropping out of League One and when the Premiership was called, Hearts also went down.

After Ann Budge’s proposed league reconstruction was voted down last week, Hearts and Thistle took legal action.

While they do not object to titles being awarded, they are arguing there should be no promotion or relegation.

The Scottish Football Association has already written to Hearts and Partick asking them to explain their reasons for taking their case outside of football’s remit.

There is already the threat they could both be hit with notice of complaints.

Stranraer decided not to go down the legal route due to the cost implications.
