Dundee school pupils back in face masks as October holidays end

Pupils returned to Dundee classrooms in facemasks today after the October school holidays.

They were following strict government guidelines - or Covid-19 Safety Mitigations.

Dundee City Council is doing everything to ensure the policy is enforced in a bid to limit the number of coronavirus cases during the winter.

Local education bosses issued fresh guidance reminding Tayside pupils and parents what the current guidelines are.

A council spokesman said: “Safety mitigations to keep children, young people and staff safe in schools are to remain in place when pupils return after the October break on Monday October 25.

“The Scottish Government has confirmed that all current mitigations, including the use of face coverings by pupils in secondary school classrooms, will still be required to help keep schools as safe as possible.

“Secondary-aged pupils, and staff in primary and secondary schools, will also still require face coverings in communal areas or when moving around the building.”

All secondary pupils are also being encouraged to take twice-weekly Lateral Flow tests as part of a range of measures to help keep schools safe.

Staff and pupils can access test kits in a range of different ways, including ordering them online here.

School meals are available as usual in schools, with all pupils in Primary 4 classes receiving free school meals from the start of term as part of the national rollout in addition to younger children.

Education chiefs are also encouraging children to walk or cycle to school but reminded children that face coverings should continue to be worn on bus services by pupils over the age of 12.

Local bus operators have enhanced cleaning regimes and it is very important that pupils support this by taking their litter away with them and not eating or drinking on board.
