Dundee's Lee Ashcroft hopes to relegate former club Kilmarnock five years on from saving them

Lee Ashcroft is desperate to send Kilmarnock down – just five years after keeping them up in the play-offs.

The centre-back started at Rugby Park and was part of the team who beat Falkirk in 2016.

Now he hopes this final, starting with Thursday’s first leg at Dens Park, goes against the Ayrshire side and gets the Dark Blues back into the top flight.

Ashcroft said: “We have given ourselves a chance but we need to keep at it. Anything can happen in a final.

“They’re not in that league for no reason, they’re a good team with a good manager.

“We know it will be tough but we also know if we play the way we can, we have a right chance.

“I’ve been in a relegation play-off before and it’s horrible from the Premiership team’s point of view.

“Nobody wants to be involved in relegation. In one of those seasons you get used to not winning many games.

“Back then I felt the pressure on myself and I think the other boys did as well. We did see it through back then but it’s a tough job. They will be organised, so we need to be at it.”

With spells at Dunfermline and now Dundee since then, he knows he has been out of the top tier for too long.

The 27-year-old added: “We have a lot of boys who’ve played in the Premiership before and that gives us confidence.

“We have been to their ground before and know what to expect.

“Hopefully that gives us a bit of advantage.

“I’ve probably been in the Championship a bit longer than I wanted to be, so I’m delighted to have a real chance now. Hopefully we can do it.

“When I arrived, I looked at the squad of players this club has and they’re more than capable of being a Premiership team. It’s a massive club and it would be good to do it for the fans.”
