Dundee records highest domestic abuse rate in Scotland


Dundee has recorded the worst domestic abuse rate in Scotland.

According to official statistics, incidents of domestic abuse have risen for a fifth year in a row after more than 65,000 cases were recorded across the country in 2020-21.

In Dundee there were 177 cases recorded per 100,000 of the local population.

The next highest was West Dunbartonshire with 168, Clackmannanshire with 158 and Glasgow City with 148

Across Scotland there were 65,251 domestic abuse incidents in the last year recorded by Police Scotland, which is a rise of four per cent on the previous 12 months.

Common assault accounted for 32 per cent of all crimes and offences committed.

Throughout the year 40 per cent of the incidents recorded by police included at least one crime or offence.

The second most frequent type of abuse was breach of the peace (23 per cent), followed by crimes against public justice (18 per cent) and vandalism (seven per cent).

Scottish Government stats show that 80 per cent of all incidents were against women, which is down by two per cent on the previous year.

The majority of the recorded incidents took place over the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday accounting for 31 per cent of all cases. This is down from 34 per cent on 2019/20.

The 2020/21 statistics show the 31 to 35-year-old age group had the highest rate for both victims and accused, while 91 per cent of incidents took place in a home.

There were 119 incidents of domestic abuse recorded by cops per 100,000 population.

Which council area has the worst domestic abuse rate?

Dundee City, West Dunbartonshire, Clackmannanshire, Glasgow City, West Lothian, North Lanarkshire, Falkirk, Fife, Midlothian, North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire were all above the Scottish average of 119.

Dundee City (177), West Dunbartonshire (168) and Clackmannanshire (158) were the three highest council areas in the country.
