Dundee Music Walk of Fame honours city's big and small stage legends

A memorial walk of fame honouring the stalwarts of Dundee's music scene has finally been installed in the city centre.

Michael Marra, Associates singer Billy Mackenzie and the Average White Band are among the best known names to feature on the granite slabs, laid at the rear of the Overgate centre.

However, the intention of the Dundee Music History Group project, the brainchild of life-long music fan Jake McDonough, is not just to remember the city's big names.

Speaking to Dundee Live, Jake said the goal was to "repay the debt" Dundee owes to the legions of performers who have entertained locals for decades, often without due recognition.

"When we lost [soul musician] Dougie Martin and Michael Marra in 2012, I thought about the fact there was no legacy for them and Dundee's other musicians," he said.

"There's nothing for all the jobs they did, the fact people went out to see them two or three times a week and they never made the big time.

"The thing about the scene when these guys were starting out was that nobody really paid [to see live music].

"There was an understanding in the past that you could go into any pub, any club, and get live music and it wouldn't cost a penny. But it meant a lot of them never made the big time.

"This is a debt repaid to them for all they did."

Beginning life in 2015, the campaign hit its stride after raising £2,000 from locals last year.

Jake then approached Dundee City Council's public art officer John Gray for advice, later setting up talks with Overgate bosses to create the memorial.

Centre chiefs agreed to install the granite slabs on a dais - a low platform designed for performing - to the rear of the shopping centre. Jake reckons it could become a prime spot for buskers.

The new memorial, completed last week, features a total of 76 names, ranging from musicians like Peter "Pepe" Benedetti and John Huband through to bands like Ringer, St Andrew & the Woolen Mill and The Wally Dugs.

There are special mentions for venues Palais and Clark's on Lindsay Street, as well as music promoters like Dave "Pops" Young.

Dundee's legendary second-hand music shop Groucho's, run by the late Alastair "Breeks" Brodie, also has a place on the tiles.

A new round of fundraising is already underway to add a further 21 names to the Walk of Fame, and to add QR codes so visitors to the memorial can hear snippets of the city's musical greats.

Donations can be made to keep the project going by visiting the Dundee Music Hall of Fame page on Facebook, where commemorative t-shirts and other merchandise can also be purchased in support of the project.

Jake, can also be contacted directly by emailing dundeemusichistory@gmail.com.

He added: "There are so many people wanting to tell their stories and be added in but we're limited by the funding that we expect to raise.

"We've made a statement with this first lot of names, something solid people can come and see.

"Hopefully it gives people an idea of where we can go from here if we continue to raise funds."

Passers-by stopped to compliment Jake on his work as he posed for photographs.

One woman said: "There's a lot of unsung heroes in Dundee, and this really is lovely."
