Dundee loses out in battle to host Radio 1’s Big Weekend next summer

Dundee music lovers have been left raging after the BBC confirmed the city will NOT host next year’s Big Weekend.

Corporation bosses revealed that Coventry will stage Radio 1's mega event next summer.

The hugely popular live show will take place over the late May Bay Holiday at the city’s War Memorial Park.

Rapper Pa Salieu grew up in Coventry and says he's "more than proud" of his city - adding having Big Weekend there is "very, very exciting".

Speaking to BBC radio’s Newsbeat he said: “It's a city full of so much vast culture. It will be sick, Coventry will appreciate it.

“For me, Coventry's exciting."

Head of Radio 1, Aled Haydn Jones, said he’s delighted to take the event to Coventry - the UK city of culture for 2021.

He said: “We can't wait to bring some of the biggest artists on the planet along with us when we head to Coventry in May.”

The event had been scheduled to run in Dundee in 2020, fourteen years since it was last hosted in the city, but covid forced it to go online, disappointing tens of thousands of music fans who had been expected to descend on the city.

Artists such as Sam Smith and Young T & Bugsey recorded sets at home instead.

Perth’s Scone Palace hosted the biggest weekend in 2018, which was staged in four locations across the UK to capitalise on the absence of Glastonbury from that year’s festival calendar.

Performers in Perth included Nigel Kennedy and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, as well as Simple Minds and Emeli Sandé.

Previous headliners at Radio 1's Big Weekend have included Stormzy, Ed Sheeran and Miley Cyrus.

Big Weekend 2021 was also shown online, but with acts - including Coldplay, AJ Tracey and Royal Blood - playing in dramatic venues.
