Dundee councillor pays tribute to ‘resilience’ of city’s schoolchildren and families

A Dundee councillor has paid tribute to the ‘resilience’ of the city’s schoolchildren and their families.

Stewart Hunter also thanked other pupils across Tayside and warned of the continued threat from the Omicron variant.

Wishing them all a ‘happy and safe Christmas and New Year’ as the end of term approaches tomorrow, he thanked them for the efforts they have made to ‘keep everyone safe’.

Mr Hunter, the council's Children and Families Convener, said: “Yet again, our pupils and their families have responded to more coronavirus challenges and I would like to pay tribute to them for their resilience in the face of these.

“It is vital that we do everything to keep our nurseries and schools open, families make a huge contribution to that.

“The hygiene guidance in schools is there for a reason and it is heartening to see the huge backing that has been given.

“We are all disappointed that Christmas activities could not quite go ahead as normal this year, but I hope that everyone can appreciate the reasons behind this.

“The recent emergence of Omicron means we have to be more vigilant than ever.”

And he added: “There has not been the disruption to nurseries and schools that was witnessed in 2020, but education has been operating under very different circumstances this year.

“I would also like to thank all our nursery and school staff, and also everyone who works across our wider children and families service.

“It is intended that nurseries and schools will open as planned after the holiday, and there will be additional safety measures in place.

“However, I would ask all families to look at the council’s website and social media channels in case there are any updates.”
