Dundee City Council leader uses Little Britain sketch to weigh in on Downing Street Xmas party scandal

The leader of Dundee City Council has weighed in on the Downing Street Christmas party scandal.

John Alexander took to Twitter last night to criticise Boris Johnson’s handling of the fallout following last year’s lockdown gathering at No10.

Using his personal councillor’s twitter account, Mr Alexander posted a picture of a scene from the BBC’s Little Britain sketch show.

Writing alongside it, he said: “The nonsense in 10 Downing Street is no laughing matter but this seems like an accurate portrayal of BJ's response in the last 24 hours…”

The meme is of Little Britain’s hapless politician, Sir Norman Fry - played by David Walliams - giving a press conference alongside his wife, outside his sprawling country mansion.

He is one of the show's most popular characters and is known for making outrageous excuses to the press after being caught in embarrassing situations.

The quote with the meme says: "Whilst working late one evening before Xmas, myself and several hundred Conservative colleagues became trapped in a function room with nothing to survive on but alcoholic drinks. I also broke the button on the room's stereo device and was unable to switch off the Xmas music..."

Mr Alexander later issued a full statement on the scandal.

Calling on Conservative councillors to join him in demanding the PM's resignation, he said: "I’m not sure that we should be at all surprised at the latest Downing Street revelations, given the long list of lies and mistruths perpetuated by the Prime Minister.

"Let’s not forget that this is a PM that lied to the Queen. But it is time to call it out and demand Boris Johnson’s resignation.

“This wasn’t a simple error of judgment or innocent mistake. What is becoming clearer and clearer is that there is something rotten at the core of this government, which is leaking into everything the UK Government touches."

And he added: “Most Dundonians have proactively followed the guidance from the NHS, why hasn’t 10 Downing Street? Our citizens have already sacrificed so much because of covid-19 – lives, time with loved ones and livelihoods.

"People have literally died in our city and I am furious at the images that I have seen in the last 24 hours.

“This isn’t just rubbing peoples face in their lack of consideration or respect for the people. This is like rubbing salt and lemon into open wounds.

“I know that there will be a significant number of conservatives and conservative voters who are livid. I ask local Conservative politicians to stand up and be counted in joining me, and millions of others, in demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation.”

Mr Alexander’s tweet and comment are the latest in a flood of criticism directed at Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party.

The Prime Minister is facing calls for his resignation after leaked video footage showed No10 aides joking about holding a Christmas party when lockdown restrictions were in place across the nation.

Following backlash on Wednesday, the PM’s former spokeswoman Allegra Stratton - seen joking in the video - announced her resignation and offered her “profound apologies.”

Mr Johnson apologised for the offence caused by the clip but said he had been repeatedly assured there was no party on December 18 last year, and has asked senior civil servant Simon Case to carry out an investigation.
