Dundalk star Dane Massey looking forward to latest 'Auld Firm' like Cork City clash

Dundalk full-back Dane Massey is looking forward to the latest meeting of the League of Ireland’s ‘Auld Firm’ when the champions play host to bitter rivals Cork City at Oriel Park on Friday night.

Massey has been an ever-present in the 27 league and cup games between the sides since 2013, a period which has seen the Lilywhites and the Leesiders consistently duke it out for the league title, and he expects the 2019 season to be no different.

“I’m very proud to have played in all of those games,” he said. “Dundalk and Cork is the game you always want to play in. You’d play in it with one leg if you had to because they’re such big fixtures.

“Cork have always been our main competitors in the league and cup and I don’t see that being different this year. They have a great core of players and they’ve added to it again this season. There’s no way can you take them for granted.”

Mick McCarthy has brought the buzz back after horror year for Ireland

Dundalk will be rigged out in their traditional white shirts for the televised fixture on Friday night but they will be clad in purple for the EA Sports Cup tie with St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park next Monday.

Yesterday, the club unveiled a new third kit which will see them raise funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Vinny Perth’s side will wear the purple kit in selected domestic cup matches this season and will make a donation of €100 for every goal they score in the EA Sports Cup and FAI Cup.

“I am proud that we have been able to collaborate on the initiative with Fyffes and CX+ Sport,” said Dundalk’s American chairman, Mike Treacy. “The collaborative effort from everyone involved shows the importance to us of working with local partners.

“As well as this exciting project, we will be announcing further initiatives in the coming months as part of a wider community scheme which will see us give back to the people of Dundalk and beyond, who for many years have given this club their unwavering and loyal support.”
