Dundalk stalwart Chris Shields signs contract extension

Dundalk stalwart Chris Shields has signed a contract extension until the end of next season.

Shields said: “Who would have thought I’d be going into 10 years at the club. That’s very rare in the League of Ireland and I take real personal pride in it.”

Lilywhites boss Vinny Perth said: “Chris Shields sums up everything about the football club. He has been through the good times and the bad.

“He has gone from being a squad player to becoming one of the most decorated players in the history of the League.”

Meanwhile, Dundalk will sign Cammy Smith on a permanent deal if he catches the eye while on loan until the summer.

The former Scottish youth international - once dubbed the ‘Bergkamp of Aberdeen’ by Craig Brown - likes to play behind the striker.

He spent a week with the Lilywhites on their recent pre-season camp in Spain and Vinny Perth said: "Cammy is an extremely talented player.

“He is a hardworking and extremely technical player and is on loan until the summer with a view to making it a permanent deal.

“We hope that happens because it will mean he has had a good spell with us."
