Dundalk's John Mountney happy with first training session under Filippo Giovagnoli

John Mountney says Dundalk are ready to get back to basics under their new Italian boss Filippo Giovagnoli.

The midfielder is the club’s joint-longest serving player with Chris Shields and has seen four managers come and go in that time.

Mountney said: “Players will want to impress the new manager and show him who they are. He knows nothing about us and it’s a clean slate for everyone.

“Today was bright and he wants us to play football in the right manner. Everyone was happy with how it went.”

Giovagnoli took the squad for two sessions today - one with defenders only and the other with midfielders and forwards.

“There’s a lot going through your head after everything that has happened but, in fairness to the two lads, it was a good session, nice and sharp,” added Mountney.

“People are talking about big pictures and mentioning big things but, for us, it’s back to the basics of taking each game at a time.

“It’s still a fantastic squad and probably the strongest we’ve ever had. We have a few weeks to try and find our feet before the Europa League game.”
