Dundalk's John Gill believes clubs should be compensated when league games are cancelled over Europe

John Gill believes rival clubs should be compensated when their league games are postponed because of European games.

Sligo Rovers are reeling after this Saturday’s home game against Dundalk was called off.

The Lilywhites’ League Cup semi-final against Bohemians on Bank Holiday Monday is also off and new dates have yet to be fixed.

Dundalk are in Champions League action in Azerbaijan this week and are guaranteed to be away from home next week regardless of Wednesday’s result.

Lilywhites first-team coach Gill said: “I think if it hadn’t been Azerbaijan, we probably would have played.

“But we’re getting back at 8.00am on Thursday and I don’t think we’ll be back by that time myself.

“Realistically, one of the games will have to go. How would you expect us to play?.”

If Dundalk beat Qarabag, they will be away to Cypriot champions APOEL FC or FK Sutjeska of Montenegro next Tuesday.

If Dundalk are knocked out by Qarabag, they will drop into the Europa League third round.

In that event, they would either play Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday or Feronikeli in Kosovo on Thursday.

Gill added: “We don’t know if we’re going to be on a plane to Bratislava or Cyprus. We’re away next week either way.

“It’s common sense (to postpone domestic games) but it’s down to the league.

“I saw a tweet that maybe teams in Europe should have home games. Or maybe there should be some sort of compensation for Sligo.”
