Dundalk fans protest against owners ahead of Shamrock Rovers match

Dundalk fans gathered outside Oriel Park this evening to vent their anger at the club’s American owners and chairman Bill Hulsizer.

The Lilywhites are taking on Shamrock Rovers tonight in the SSE Airtricity League.

For a long time the dominant force in Irish football, Dundalk lost their League crown to tonight's opponents last season and this campaign has been a torrid one.

Sitting in seventh, having won just two of their 11 league games, Dundalk are five points off bottom spot and 16 behind league leaders Rovers.

Gathering at 6pm this evening, a group of about 150 Dundalk fans, armed with banners, voiced their anger at how the club is being run.

Dundalk sporting director Jim Magilton - who remains in caretaker charge of the first-team - met with a number of disgruntled Lilywhite fans on Wednesday night.

But while Magilton said a steering group would be established, a request to have fan representation on the board was ruled out.

Magilton said: “We had a couple of hours of really good chat and aired views. But in terms of having a supporter on the board, I think that's a little far-fetched.”

And asked if the fan frustration is registering with the American owners, Magilton said: “There’s an understanding of it, but distance doesn't help.

“But you don't buy a football club not to have a feeling towards that football club.”
