Dundalk crisis deepens as coach John Gill announces departure

Dundalk have been plunged further into crisis by the loss of experienced coach John Gill.

Having dispensed with the services of manager Vinny Perth last Thursday, the club is to officially unveil new manager, the Italian Filippo Giovagnoli, and his assistant Giuseppe Rossi, at a press conference at Oriel Park tomorrow afternoon.

Giovagnoli, whose appointment has surprised many of the club's followers, arrived at the club this morning, reportedly on a short-term deal brokered by the club's owners, Peak 6.

But Gill has this evening ended his involvement with the reigning Premier Division champions. "Today I left @DundalkFC," he Tweeted.

"I felt I had no choice given recent events. I am extremely said it has come to this.

"I wish the club's staff, players and fans every success in the future."

The Dubliner was in his second spell with the club, having previously guided the Lilywhites to promotion as manager in 2008.

He returned as first team coach in January 2019 after the departure of Stephen Kenny from the hot-seat.

Gill, who has a Pro-Licence, was brought in to assist head coach Perth - who at that stage didn't have a Pro-Licence and so couldn't be appointed as manager.

Following Perth's departure from Oriel - after the 3-0 loss in the Champions League to Slovenian club NK Celje - Gill and Alan Reynolds took charge of Saturday's 3-0 loss at Sligo Rovers.

Afterwards, Reynolds ruled himself out of contention for the hot-seat and it remains to be seen if the former Waterford boss remains at the club.
