Dundalk confirm Vinny Perth return as he's announced as head coach

Vinny Perth completed his sensational return to the Dundalk hot seat tonight.

Sacked by the Lilywhites after their Champions League exit just last August, the Dubliner is back at the helm.

The league winning boss met with club officials and players yesterday and took the team for training today.

Perth has maintained a good relationship with Dundalk's American chairman Bill Hulsizer since his departure 10 months ago.

Sporting director Jim Magilton has been in temporary charge of first team duties since Filippo Giovagnoli's exit earlier this season.

But he was reluctant to take permanent charge and said Dundalk were assessing CVs and applications from around the world.

But while Dave Rogers looked poised to be appointed earlier this week, Perth was always the chairman's preferred choice.

And he will be in the dugout for Friday's Home league clash with Longford Town at Oriel Park.

A club statement read: "Dundalk FC can confirm that Vinny Perth has returned to Oriel Park as head coach

"The Dublin native led Dundalk to the SSE Airtricity League title, the EA Sports Cup, the Unite the Union Champions Cup and the FAI President’s Cup in 2019 before leaving the club last summer.

"Vinny’s history at Dundalk includes a period that saw the Lilywhites enjoy an unprecedented spell of domestic and European success."

The statement continued: "Perth will report to Jim Magilton, the sporting director. We are confident that this will be an effective combination to return the Lilywhites to winning ways.

"We would also like to thank all of our staff, supporters, and fans for their patience and support during this difficult time. We are all looking forward to enjoying football and hoisting some new trophies in the near future.

Meanwhile, Rogers has urged Dundalk fans to get behind Perth after missing out on the job himself.

The former Dundalk player tweeted: "I’ve stayed pretty silent over the past few days and laughed at many of the comments.

"All I would like to say is that it would have been an honour to manage Dundalk FC and yes it was close, though now it's the time to back the players, staff and the new head coach."
