Dundalk complete signing of Scottish midfielder Sam Stanton

Dundalk have completed the signing of Scottish midfielder Sam Stanton following his exit from American club Phoenix Rising.

Stanton, 26, is a product of the Hibernian academy and made his debut for the Edinburgh club at 17.

He was at the club under Pat Fenlon and was a team-mate of former Dundalk star Richie Towell.

Stanton, who was capped at Under-21 level for Scotland, then became a Hibs regular under Terry Butcher.

Loan spells followed at Livingston, Dumbarton and Dundee United, where the switch was made permanent in 2018.

Stanton moved to America a year ago but cut short his spell at Christmas after Covid-19 placed a question mark over this year’s campaign.

Stanton said: “I had a phone call with Filippo Giovagnoli and I really liked what he said to me.

“Dundalk is a good club and I’m really excited to be here. I felt it was an opportunity I couldn’t really turn down.”

Lilywhites sporting director Jim Magilton said: “Sam will provide real competition and experience to an area where we needed strengthening following recent departures.

“We’re all really looking forward to working with him and developing his game even further.”
