Dundalk bidding to reaffirm top spot before crunch September 23 clash with Shamrock Rovers

Dundalk's eagerly anticipated duel with Shamrock Rovers has been fixed for Monday, September 23 and will be televised live.

But whether it will be key to the title race remains to be seen as the Lilywhites have been unstoppable of late.

And Vinny Perth’s charges will be a whopping 10-points clear of the Hoops if they win their last game in hand tonight when they host their former arch rivals Cork City.

The Rebels have lost their way in spectacular fashion but Neale Fenn will hope to stop the rot as he chases a first victory at the third time of asking since his appointment.

“No matter how Cork City are going they will always up it against us,” said Dundalk’s Sean Hoare.

“The rivalry is still there and it’s going to be a very tough game for us. They are a good side and have a new manager.

“They haven’t had the best of seasons but that doesn’t matter when both of us come up against each other.

“They will be coming to Oriel Park to put in a performance and will be trying to get one over on us.”

New City boss Fenn was frustrated after two home defeats in a row - to Waterford and Sligo Rovers - and would love a result at one of his former clubs tonight.

Fenn said: “Nobody likes losing. When you’ve dominated a game for large spells and played well for large spells, disappointment does set in.

“We’ve had to pick ourselves back up. But when you look at the positives, we played some good stuff and created lots of chances.

“We just need to do the same against Dundalk and work hard to dig out a result because we need a reaction.

“But we’re under no illusions whatsoever as going to dundalk is a daunting prospect - but one we’re looking forward to.”

Dundalk’s John Mountney is out having had foot surgery. Sean Murray also misses out with a knee injury while Daniel Kelly and Jamie McGrath are doubts.

City pair Cian Bargary and Cian Murphy miss the game with injuries.
