Dundalk 3 Shelbourne 2: Greg Sloggett stunner sinks battling Shels

Greg Sloggett‘s brilliant second half goal earned Dundalk their first league win in five games last night.

Michael Duffy opened the scoring in the fourth minute. He cut in from the left and shifted past two players before unleashing a stunning strike past Shels stopper Colin McCabe.

Brian Gartland, making just his second league start of the season, met Stefan Colovic’s corner to double Dundalk’s advantage seven minutes later.

Shels hit back when Daniel Byrne headed in Georgie Poynton’s free kick on 20 minutes.

The defender met it at the back post to power past Aaron McCarey, who was picked ahead of Gary Rogers by new Dundalk boss Filippo Giovagnoli.

Shelbourne were then level when Gartland was harshly adjudged to have hauled down ex-Lilywhite favourite Ciaran Kilduff from a corner.

Poynton, another former Dundalk player, sent McCarey the wrong way with his spot kick.

Neither side created much in a lacklustre opening to the second half.

Sloggett changed that. He won the ball 25 yards from goal and unleashed a shot into the top corner of McCabe’s net.

Despite several late corners, the visitors couldn’t force another leveller.
