Duncrue Belfast fire at scrap metal yard

Firefighters have been battling a large blaze at a scrap metal yard in North Belfast overnight.

Crews were called to McKenzies NI, the metal recycler based on Duncrue Street , late on Sunday night, June 2.

This morning the fire service said 44 firefighters from six crews were at the scene trying to bring the incident under control.

It is understood there is still a large amount of smoke in the area which could cause traffic delays in the area this morning.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Following receipt of a large number of calls, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are dealing with a large amount of scrap metal on fire in the yard of McKenzies NI Ltd.

"A total of 6 pumping appliances, an aerial appliance and 44 firefighters are engaged in firefighting operations.

"The fire has been contained to the yard area.

"Crews are utilising High Volume pumps to convey water to the fire.

"Operations will continue through the night and in to the morning.

"There are no reported injuries and all persons are accounted for."

In a later statement on Monday, a spokeswoman added: “We received a call 11.51pm  last night  (2 June 2019) to attend a fire at McKenzies NI Ltd, Duncre Street, Belfast.

“At the height of the incident,  a total of 6 Fire Appliances,  an Aerial Appliance and 44 Firefighters were engaged in firefighting operations.

“Firefighters dealt with a large number of cars and scrap material on fire. The blaze was fanned by high winds and working in challenging conditions Firefighters contained the fire to the yard area. 

“The incident is ongoing. There are currently 4 Fire Appliances, a High Volume Pumping Appliance and over 20 Firefighters dampening down at the scene.  Three cranes from McKenzies are assisting Firefighters in turning over material as part of the dampening down process.

“The incident is likely to continue into late afternoon and Duncrue Street remains partially closed.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
