Dunbar woman loses thousands in telephone scam – and police want others to be aware of the danger

A Dunbar woman lost more than £10,000 after falling victim to a telephone scam – and police want others to be aware so they don't suffer the same fate.

The victim lost a five-figure sum in the fraud, and this has prompted officers in East Lothian to issue fresh advice urging people to be "extra vigilant" when receiving unexpected phone calls, particularly from people claiming to be their bank.

They added: "Never assume a phone call is authentic just because someone knows your basic details, for example your name and address. If something feels wrong, then it's usually right to question it.

"Your bank or police will never contact you by telephone asking you to move money or hand over information about your account.

"Do not divulge personal information over the phone unless you initiate the call. If in doubt terminate the call."

Police Scotland say there are a number of steps people can take to protect themselves from bogus phone callers, including making their number ex-directory and contacting local trading standards.
