Dumper truck drivers 'ignoring' no access signs on Clifton Road

The signs say ‘No Access’ but residents claim that doesn’t stop dumper trucks and earth movers rumbling down Clifton Road to Calderwood housing development in East Calder.

And its a problem  locals fear could last for years, despite promises to close the road and build a turning circle.

In a rapidly-changing landscape Clifton Road is lined with water filled ditches.

Stirling Developments say there has been a drop in construction traffic since they put up the signs.

They are now applying for planning permssion for the  road to be used as access to properties around Nethershiel farm, on the other side of the development land from Overshiel Farm. The original Nethershiel access road has been redesignated as a footpath and bridleway.

But Paul Martin  whose cottage is on Clifton Road says the signs aren’t doing their job.

He said: “I accept that they are building houses, and I’m not trying to stop them  but we should not have to put up with their dumpers and graders coming up and down the road all day. We’ve already had to road relaid  and the verges get torn up, and now it floods when there is heavy rain. We don’t even have access to the village now unless we walk through a building site.”

Mr Martin was promised a turning circle on the boundary of Clifton Road and the Calderwood site a year ago, to be built by the middle of this year.

According to Ray Kirk of housebuilder Stirling Developments, a turning circle, which would close the road, is still part of the plan.

Mr Kirk said: “The signs were put up to  stop construction traffic using Clifton Road and that has by and large ceased. We have had to formalise the access to Nethershiel, not only for  the haulage business, but for other properties  and that’s the purpose of the planning application.”

A spokesman for West Lothian Council said the planning application would come before the Development Management committee at its next meeting.
