Dumfriesshire MSP Oliver Mundell ejected from Holyrood chamber after calling Nicola Sturgeon a liar

Dumfriesshire MSP Oliver Mundell was ejected from the Holyrood chamber this week after calling Nicola Sturgeon a liar.

The Tory raised a point of order about the First Minister over the Alex Salmond inquiry.

MSP Linda Fabiani, the leader of the committee convener investigating the government’s handling of complaints against the former SNP chief, has said the group is “completely frustrated” with information being withheld by various parties.

Mr Mundell told MSPs Ms Sturgeon had previously informed the chamber the government would provide whatever material the committee requested.

He said: “Will the Presiding Officer ask the First Minister to explain why she lied to parliament?”

Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh immediately pulled up Mr Mundell and demanded an apology.

But the Dumfriresshire MSP added: “I apologise to you Presiding Officer but in this case I do feel it’s the appropriate word.

“I think it’s disrespectful to the parliament for the First Minister to make a promise and not to keep it. I can’t withdraw the word no.

Mr Mundell was then asked to leave the chamber for using “unacceptable” l anguage.

Afterwards he said: “Nicola Sturgeon repeatedly told the Scottish Parliament she would ‘co-operate fully’ with the inquiry.

“So unless the First Minister provides whatever material the Salmond inquiry requests, as she promised, then she has plainly lied to Parliament.”

The Scottish Government has said it “strongly rejects any suggestion of obstruction” in the Alex Salmond inquiry and is seeking to initiate legal proceedings to allow release of papers to the committee.
