Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell to stand for Tories at next General Election

Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell will stand again at the next general election.

Mr Mundell has been re-selected by the Scottish Conservative and Unionist party as their candidate for the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale constituency which he has represented since it was first created in 2005.

Prior to that, he served as one of the first MSPs for the south of Scotland area, being elected at the first Scottish Parliament election in 1999.

He was chosen by party members at a special meeting held in Moffat on Saturday.

Mr Mundell, a former Scottish Secretary, said: “Since I was first elected to serve our area, I have worked hard to improve the lives of local people in every community in Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.

“I am committed to ensuring the focus stays on local priorities and not another vote on independence, which it’s clear remains the single-minded objective of the SNP.

“My priority has always been on raising the issues most important to our communities and if, with the support of local people, I am returned as the MP for our area, that will continue to be the case.

“Key issues for me include jobs and the local economy, maintaining and developing local public transport, fighting to help protect vital services in our rural towns and villages, and supporting rural communities more generally.

“I will continue to campaign on issues like these which directly affect the lives of local people and against the distraction and division of another vote on independence.

“By re-electing me when the General Election comes, local people can be sure will continue to have a dedicated and community-minded local MP who puts their interests first.”
