Dumfries workers opt for food bank donations rather than secret Santa gifts

Generous workers at a Dumfries-based company have sparked a tide of festive giving.

Workers at Staffsafe exchanged their annual secret Santa gifts for cash donations to help vulnerable families in the region this Christmas.

Instead of the usual gift exchange with fellow staff at the Crichton Campus site, employees at the company, which provides safe rooms for big name companies, opted instead to donate a cash sum to go to boost the coffers of the Friars Vennel-based Dumfriesshire Foodbank.

The move was the brainchild of control room operator Caelainn Rafferty, who co-ordinated the collection.

She told the Standard: “We are quite a small company and we all know each other quite well, so we usually do a secret Santa and spend about £10 each.

“But with everything that’s going on this year, we just asked everyone if they would be happy with us taking their money and donating it to the foodbank instead.”

The big-hearted workers collected £160 to help boost the food bank as the coronavirus pandemic continues to bite.

But their generosity has also helped inspire others, added Caelainn: “It will maybe inspire other businesses to help out as well.

“My sister works for Jardine’s Logistics in Lockerbie, they are a haulage company and they don’t have a secret Santa but they collected food from staff and donated that to the food bank as well.

“There may be things other companies can do to help out.”
