Dumfries woman visits Greece to donate funds to forest fire victims

When Eleni Barbetsea saw the scenes of devastation as forest fires raged through Greece she was moved into action.

The 59-year-old, who was born in Athens, decided to run the 2018 Dumfries half marathon to raise cash to help families who had been displaced as a result.

Eleni said: “I feel pain for the families, their loss and the trauma they have suffered.

“I’m speechless for their trauma but in full admiration for their fighting spirit. When you encounter situations of this nature it puts everything into perspective.”

The coastal area of Attica was hit in July and 99 people died with hundreds more residents evacuating the area, mainly from the seaside village of Mati.

Greece deployed its entire fleet of fire-fighting aircraft and more than 250 fire engines.

“It was a good feeling that I was able to help in a small way which according to the families was a big gesture,” she said.

“It was humbling to see how strong both families really are in the face of adversity supporting one another. These are moments to remember, it’s a unique experience that will stay with me forever.

“Both families were grateful for the support and it was a moving experience to listen to their story. An amazing strong community spirit.

“On behalf of the families and myself thanks to friends, family and businesses in Dumfries who donated towards the cause.”
