Dumfries woman cycles more than 200 miles across south-west Scotland - without leaving home

A Dumfries woman has cycled more than 200 miles across the south-west of Scotland for charity – all in her home.

Heather Knaggs, who is the pharmacy store manager at Boots in Dumfries, has raised £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support after a month of pedalling power.

The route consisted of Heather cycling from Boots locations in Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway but it wasn’t all straightforward.

The 38-year-old said: “I started cycling in lockdown and I’ve been enjoying it and I like to challenge myself and go outside of my comfort zone.

“We’ve got a bike machine with a GPS that tracks routes that go uphill and mimics it.

“We normally do a Macmillan coffee morning but because of the coronavirus we thought it wasn’t that good an idea.

“I’ve enjoyed cycling and I thought I could ride the equivalent of the distance between all of the Boots locations in the south west of Scotland. I was doing a bit every day for a month.”

Heather started off in Troon before heading through Ayr, Patna, Thornhill, Annan, Dumfries and through west for the “Tour de Boots”.

She added: “There were a lot of ups and downs on the route so it was hard going but I received a lot of support from colleagues, friends and customers.”

A competition to win a beauty hamper by guessing the number of miles and stores Heather would cycle was won by Mandy McCulloch.
