Dumfries TV viewer loses channels in switchover

A Dumfries man has lost more than 100 television channels since a scheduled update last month.

Visually impaired Andrew Reynard, 55, said he relies on the telly for company.

But he was left confused after a routine re-scan left him with just 20 channels to choose from - most of them radio.

Mr Reynard, who lives in Burns Street, said: “The channels have been out since I was asked to re-tune at the end of July and I’ve had engineers out and they’ve not been able to sort the issue.

“When I’ve rung up Freeview to ask them what to do to restore the channels I had, they just keep telling me to re-tune and I’ll get what I get.

“They said this was a routine thing. But I didn’t expect to lose all these channels. I know of at least one other person near me who has been left with just three channels.

“There are a good number of vulnerable or elderly people that will have lost these channels and rely on their TV for some companionship.”

Mr Reynard said the problems started when people across the region were asked to retune their TVs following an upgrade to the main Caldbeck transmitter.

The work at the Cumbrian mast was part of changes introduced by the UK Government to upgrade transmitters across the UK, with 160,000 homes in the south-west of Scotland, Cumbria and the South Lakes required to re-tune to continue receiving their service.

A Freeview spokesman said: “Required changes to Freeview signals at the Caldbeck transmitter group were completed successfully on 31 July and services are broadcasting as expected.

“Anyone experiencing difficulties with retuning their TV equipment can call the Freeview Advice Line free on 0808 100 0288, where our team will be happy to help.

“Viewers may be eligible for free in-home support, including aerial work where necessary. Advice is also available on our website at www.freeview.co.uk/tvchanges, which includes videos on retuning equipment from the most popular manufacturers.”
