Dumfries to Kippford classic motorbike run raises more than £4,000 for charity

A classic motorcycle run from Dumfries to Kippford organised by a man from the seaside village has raised more than £4,000 for charity.

Dapper Donald Reid donned his best tweeds to drive the 25 miles to the Galloway Riviera on his 1982 950cc Moto Guzzi Spada three wheeler.

He was joined by other well-dressed riders, some on vintage-styled machines, for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, a global event designed to raise awareness of prostate cancer and men’s mental health on behalf of Movember.

Donald, who survived a near-death experience with cancer in 2020, has raised money for around 10 different cancer charities since.

And he was delighted when Sunday’s jaunt to Kippford pulled in more than £4,000 – four times his original £1,000 target.

He told the News: “The Veteran’s Garden in Dumfries sent us on our way with hot rolls and hot drinks and flags.

“We went round the Crichton church, along the coast to New Abbey and finished at the Mariner Hotel in Kippford, who kindly put on soup and sandwiches for us. The weather was kind to us.

“There were five Gentlemen’s Rides in Scotland and more than 800 across the world – and we were in the top 100 fundraisers.

“Men die on average six years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons.”

Donald added: “Thanks go our sponsors the Mariner, Whisky Broker at Creetown, Solway Spirits at Annan and Wee Dram Barrel Creations at Port William.

“Our raffle also boosted the final total and the top prize was a Lalique decanter from Glenturret Distillery, the oldest distillery in Scotland.”

The event was supported by Royal Enfield Motorcycles in Dumfries.
