Dumfries teenager interviews Darth Vader actor Hayden Christensen

Dumfries teenager Findlay Thorburn is the envy of Star Wars fans after getting to interview Darth Vader actor, Hayden Christensen.

The 14-year-old St Joseph’s College pupil met the star ahead of Friday’s long-awaited release of new mini-series Obi-Wan Kenobi – which launches on Disney Plus – for a BBC Newround recording. And while fans are looking forward to a new TV adventure in a galaxy far, far away, Findlay gave the Canadian actor – who first appeared at Darth Vader in two Star Wars films in the 2000s – a lesson in Scots language.

He jokingly explained that “Obi-Wan Kenobi” has two Scots words in it – “Wan” and “Ken” and persuaded Hayden to try a sentence in a Scottish accent with them in it.

Hayden, who stars alongside Scots actor Ewan McGregor as the Jedi knight in hiding, Obi-Wan, and newcomer Moses Ingram, told Findlay that it was a no-brainer to pull on his Vader costume: “I love this character, he’s a character that means a lot to me, so when I got the phone call, it was a very easy decision.”

He also revealed that the costume and world-famous mask were “very heavy, very hot, and cool to wear”.

Telling Hayden that he is a “massive Star Wars fan”, Findlay ended the interview by saying how lovely it was to meet him and was thrilled when the actor sincerely replied: “Likewise man, great interview – a lot of fun.”

Friday’s launch featureed two episodes of season one with viewers getting to see the other four instalments each Wednesday p to June 22. The show takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, or about nine years before Episode IV: A New Hope.
