Dumfries schoolboy takes part in Sprint for Seals to help favourite holiday hotspot during lockdown

A Dumfries schoolboy has kept links with his favourite holiday hotspot in the coronavirus lockdown.

Finlay Stoppard pulled on his running shoes and pounded the pavements of Dumfries, running 45 miles in June to raise cash for injured seals.

The five-year-old took up the Sprint for Seals challenge to help boost funds at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Little Finlay, a pupil at St Andrew’s Primary, visits the centre every year on his family’s summer trip to Cornwall.

But the youngster went one better than a single sprint to help the creatures and instead ran every day in June to gather sponsorship money for the sanctuary.

Proud mum Suzanne told the Standard: “Seals are Finlay’s favourite animal and I think he knows everything about them. He knows more than me.

“We usually go there every year but because we can’t this year Finlay follows them online and watches their films and stuff. It was their Sprint for Seals campaign and I think they meant one sprint but Finlay likes running anyway so he has been going running with his dad every day.”

The Georgetown youngster has joined dad Francis to complete his sessions.

Suzanne said: “We are really proud of him. He has run in the rain and run in the heat a few times without complaint.”

Chuffed Finlay raised more than £350 for the sanctuary in Gweek, which takes in the stricken creatures with a view to returning them to the wild.

It is also home to a number of seals who cannot be reintroduced to their natural habitat.
