The issue was caused by a pressure issue on Shakespeare Street on Monday afternoon.
As a result of air being trapped in the supply a number of home owners reported having “dirty” water.
Engineers fixed the issue on Monday evening and apologised for any inconvenience to customers.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Yesterday morning, there was a burst on our network in Shakespeare Street, Dumfries, which impacted customer water supplies in the area.
“The burst was caused by an issue with a pressure reducing valve on the network.
“Our engineers worked throughout the day to repair the burst and the valve, whilst providing support to impacted customers.
“Repairs were completed in the evening.
“Where customers are still finding they have discoloured water, we would advise them to run their cold kitchen tap at half pressure until the water runs clear.
“For customers experiencing milky/cloudy discolouration, this is due to air trapped in the supply and it will clear naturally.
“We would like to thank all those affected by burst for their patience and understanding, and apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
