Dumfries nightclub to stay closed for up to two months despite Scottish Government go-ahead

Chancers nightclub in Dumfries is to re-open in two months.

Boss Brian Armstrong plans a revamp of the town centre nightspot and is launching a recruitment drive to sign up new staff.

The Scottish Government gave the go ahead for clubs to re-open next week but Mr Armstrong said: “It will be eight weeks before Chancers is open again.

“We had been planning a re-fit inside the place before the pandemic hit and now we can re-open we are going ahead with that. I also have 18 staff to find.

“We closed last March and could see it coming and shut the doors on the Thursday before all the (hospitality) places shut on the Friday.

“It has been a tough time for everyone and the business grants were a Godsend to help keep people going.

“We are planning a big opening night and I am sure a lot of people in the town will be delighted too that Chancers is going to re-open.”

Mr Armstrong welcomed the relaxing of the Covid-19 measures and told how he had heard rumours the famous Dumfries nightclub would never open again.

He added: “I had heard that but it was never the case. We just want to do as much of the refurbishment as we can which will take about six to eight weeks, but nearer the eight weeks mark to be honest.

“It will be good for the town’s nightime economy with The Venue opening up as well and put new life into the town centre.

“It is a shame to see so many pubs that won’t open up again in the town.

“I am born and bred in Dumfries and want to see the town thriving again and if we can take our business to the next stage I will be very happy.”

Mr Armstrong has owned Chancers for six years and also has business interests in Edinburgh.
