Dumfries NHS worker aims to pull plane one kilometre for charity challenge

Most fundraisers jump from a plane but Dumfries NHS worker Dave Murray is not having any of that.

The 53-year-old ex-infantry with the KOSB is in for the long haul.

And that means a mission to single-handedly pull a 1,500 kilos Cherokee aeroplane for a distance of one 1km.

Cash raised will go to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary’s theatre department – where he works as a health care support worker – and its diabetic department for equipment, as well as the Dumfries Veterans Garden.

And he has already raised £580 of his £1,000 target on his online donations page.

Dave, who has 12 years service with the NHS, said: “The money raised will boost my colleagues morale in the theatre department with them being stretched to the limit through Covid-19.

“The diabetic department did a fantastic job looking after my daughter, Zara, for years and this is some payback to them.”

Zara was diagnosed with diabetes when she was just five-years-old and had both kidney and pancreas transplants during her life. Tragically she got sepsis and died in 2009.

Dave added: “And the third to benefit will be the Veterans Garden in Dumfries which helps those from the armed forces suffering with PTSD and so on in many ways.

“Myself being a KOSB veteran with eight years service, I know how important the garden is to relax and the money will help others use this vital community service.”

Delighted with the support he has had so far Dave has been busy practising for the big pull and building up his physical strength.

This has included getting a special bar made by a friend for the pull which will take place on Saturday, November 13, at Kirkbride airfield in Cumbria.

And he has been pulling his own Volvo Estate car to get ready, as well as honing his mental and physical strength which he gets from being a karate instructor with his Dumfries Wado-Kai Club.

It meets on Tuesdays at Georgetown’s Lochvale House for kids and adult sessions, and at DGOne on Friday nights.
