Dumfries Morrisons shoppers and staff donating food for vulnerable and elderly during coronavirus pandemic

Staff and customers at a Dumfries supermarket are donating food for vulnerable families and the elderly.

A collection area has been set up near the cafe at Morrisons.

The store’s Myra Smith said: “People are being very generous and we are being donated tonnes of goods which we are quickly passing on to a variety of agencies.

“As always the bulk goes to the foodbank at the First Base Agency on Buccleuch Street which makes up hundreds of food parcels.

“We are also donating to many others in the town and beyond including Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association, the River of Life Church, day centres, care homes and the Jolly Harvester who are working with Aberlour.

“They are all working very hard to make sure people in the community do not go hungry.”

The supermarket is also offering NHS staff a 10 per cent discount on shopping.

A spokesman said: “The NHS staff are facing unprecedented challenges during the coronavirus emergency and many are working well beyond the call of duty.

“The 10 per cent discount is a thank you to the 1.5 million National Health Service workers throughout the country and it will last until July 12 when it will be reviewed.”

NHS staff just need to present their ID card to receive the discount.
