Dumfries man who smashed car windows with metal bar given community service

Rampaging Russell Brown smashed windows in a woman’s car with a metal bar, pierced a hole in a door and damaged a wing mirror in a trail of destruction.

The 38-year-old Dumfries man admitted the attack in court and was told he had narrowly avoided prison after being sentenced to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

Brown, of Glencairn Road, vandalised the car on June 12 last year at the town’s Young Avenue and was chased down the street by a neighbour before he escaped and drove off.

However, the witness managed to note down his number plate and he was traced and charged.

Brown appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to maliciously damaging the car and striking it with a metal bar.

The woman who owned the car heard repeated banging outside and when she looked out of her window saw her vehicle had been damaged including a smashed windscreen, smashed wing mirror and a hole punched through a door.

A witness was looking out of his living room window and also heard the damage being done.

He chased Brown who managed to drive off, but the witness took down the number plate.

The court heard there was no cost estimate for repairing the damage available.

Brown’s defence lawyer said that it was a “tit-for-tat incident”.

Sheriff Colm Dempsey told Brown: “In respect of this matter I am sentencing you, as a direct alternative to prison, to unpaid work in the community.

“It would have been 150 hours, but for the guilty plea it will be reduced to 120 hours and I will allow 12 months for it to be completed. If it is breached you will be brought back here.”
